The driver file itself may have become corrupted, have you tried replacing it?

Did you actually install the Vista drivers from ATI? https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=5712

Okay, tried rolling it back but never had the option highlighted. Still have the exclamation point next to the graphics card in the device manager...what to do, what to do :(
Try disabling UAP and install the drive from the suggested link by Peter. Did you try to install the drives maually? You can try to update the driver manually by telling Windows where to look for your drivers. Usually ATI > Support > ati_LH_RC0 > Packages > Drviers.

Has anyone found a fix to this problem?? I have exact same problem on my system. I have tried all of the fixes suggested in this posting and nothing has worked. Are we waiting on a new driver for this version of the public beta from ATI? I have emailed ATI and have yet gotten any kind of response.

Not here. I have a card extremely similar to OP's. His is a Radeon X800 GT. Mine is a Radeon X800XL (both have 256MG RAM). I'm running with the original driver Vista Setup installed. It's from ATI, dated 4/26/2002, version 7.7.9.0, WDDM. There are no errors or conflicts. Everything runs perfectly. I see no reason to "update" this driver.
Is it possible that this has something to do with upgrade installs vs clean installs -- i.e., upgrading an old driver? (I doubt it since I think that Vista takes every old XP driver and discards it.)

Just chiming in here. I'm running an "old" Radeon 9600 Pro with 256MB of onboard RAM. I've tried everything that is suggested in this thread and more but no dice. It's code 43 all the way for me, both with the "original" Vista driver and ATI's latest Vista Beta2 driver. For the record, this card is running without any problems on XP. I can even play some of the most recent games on it (at low resolutions). It's not the original video card, which used to be a Nvidia Ti4200.
From the diversity of cards mentioned in this thread I'm thinking it may be a motherboard or P'n'P issue instead of a video card issue.
For completeness sake I'll mention my pc config : Northwood P4 @ 2.67GHz (i.e. no Hyper-Threading) with 1 GB PC-2700 RAM It's a Medion PC with a SiS648 chipset motherboard, custom-made for Aldi by MSI. The on-board IDE controller has the following devices connected to it: * Seagate ST3120023A hard disk * Sony CD-RW CRX210E1 * PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105 The on-board USB controller is 1.1 only.
To be fair, it's not the only problem I'm experiencing with Vista. Vista won't install when the PC is booted from the DVD. It complains that I need to insert the "media" that contains the drivers for my "unknown device". Installing from within Windows XP (but still choosing a clean install) did work but I still see problems with my IDE devices when in Vista. My DVD and CD appear and disappear between boots so I'm guessing my IDE controller is malfunctioning or at least suffering from a bad Vista driver.
Yes, this PC is overdue for being replaced but tell that to the bank and my wife (not necessaily in that order ;-)) Besides, theoretically it should still qualify for the complete "Vista Aero Glass Experience" :-)
Hope someone can shed some light on this.
Here is what i could figure out:
both Vista and ATI Drivers won't work. The ATI Driver won't even install itself, it's only possible when doing it manually. The Reason seams to be that the Installer doesn't recognize the Card.
What worked for me: Latest Win XP Drivers. But only with "update drivers", "look for them manually" and select "Have a Disk" (!) giving Vista the inf. What also worked was the Driver shipped with the Card from Sapphire.
What also might work could be a complete uninstall of all ATI Drivers (look at the ATI HP for making the correct Registry changes) and then make a clean install. Haven't tried this yet.

I have a AGP X800XTPE running on an Asrock 939dual motherboard and I am having the same problem.
Now it could be that I need special motherboard drivers (As it is a DUAL AGP/ PCI-E board) but there are none on Asrock site yet) to get the AGP side working correctly, but knowing ATI it is more likely to be them!
I have an AGP X800XTPE (UK) and also have this problem.
The ATI log did mention something about default language, so I tried switching to US instead of UK still no joy..
It could be my Motherboard requires special drivers for AGP (It's a Asrock 939Dual AGP + PCI-E board)
I have same problem with my Radeon 9550, using latest Vista drivers from ATI. Says the device has problems and cannot start.

I have had the same problems to with my 9800PRO. I used the XP drivers as suggested elsewhere in the replies and got a useable interface, but no AGP acceleration at all, so no Glass interface and no games (not a problem).
The drivers for Vista on ATI's site are for a previous version of Vista, not the current 5384 build. I tried them as well, with no luck and the dreaded code 43.
The original Microsoft supplied driver with build 5384 also didnt load with code 43.
Someone mentioned the 939DUAL-SATA2 Asrock motherboard. I'm using one of these and I noticed that Beta 5384 is supplied with the required ULI AGP v3 driver required to make AGP cards work with the chipset. I also tried replacing this with the latest ULI driver from their website. This made no difference at all.
I have filled in both ATI's reports and Microsofts feedback reports on this and I await a solution to the problem. In the meantime I'm downloading (very slowly) the 64bit version of Beta 5384 to see if that is any better and hoping that someone comes up with a working solution very soon as until they do (unless the 64bit version works) I'm going back to XP, until its fixed.

I issued a ticket to ati and got the usual junk response that this is beta drivers and they don't provide support and a link to file a report to their feedback but the page will not load when I went there. I am betting this is just an issue of the drivers not working for this particular version of Vista and they are probably getting ready to issue the new version.

My Radeon 9600 Pro didn't work (kept getting "code 43" error messages). I think I've solved it by following the Vista device and software report, which I ran before installation and totally ignored! Basically, it gave me a list of drivers that would be required, the upshot being that "generic" ATI card drivers were included and any further ATI driver upgrades/control panel installations proved to be unneccessary (initially, I made the mistake of downloading and installing all available drivers from various websites). Try trusting the included drivers!!! One "clean install" later, and everything's fine (so far!!!).
"Leo333" wrote:
> Hi i got the 64 edition and i get code 43 with my ati x700 mobility as well.
Hi. I used to have this problem. The solution that worked for me was the following:
Background: My motherboard has a nforce 2 chipset (Abit nfs-7 v2?). I tried installing the chipset-drivers for win-xp. This installation failed halfway through. Still, the device manager showed that most system drivers were installed.
The solution involved replacing the "nforce memory controller" drivers and the "nforce AGP host to pci bridge"-driver with the standard drivers supplied by microsoft. "Update Driver Software" -> "Browse my computer for driver software" -> "Let me pick from a list..." Then choose a standard driver, or at least one supplied by microsoft. I did update both these drivers before rebooting so I am not sure both drivers were to blame. Perhapes using a standard driver for "nforce AGP host to pci bridge" is sufficient?
All these drivers are listed as "System devices" in the device manager.
Hope this is useful for someone, Ivar P

I installed Vista Beta 2 on an Asus P4V800D-X (VIA PT880 Ultra) with a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB - and the computer nearly froze, both with the driver installed by Vista and the driver for Beta 2 downloaded from the ATI website. Same Experience on that machine with a Radeon X1300 PCIe.
So I put the 9800pro into a machine with Asus K8N-E deluxe (nForce3) and Vista runs smoothly, with Aero/Glass, with the ATI driver 7.7.9.0 (04-26-2006) provided by Vista - and the 9800pro is shown in the device manager as WDDM.

I read a while in the forum, but i didnt find a possible solution formy card. I also tried to update the driver via the integrated driver wizard of vista (right click in device manager on the device you wanna install, then update driver)

Same here with a Sapphire x800 Pro 256MB.
I manually installed the latest XP drivers and it worked fine (ie, there was no more error and I was able to set the correct screen resolution) but with a noticable drop of stability (LOTS of freezes) and without Glass interface . I also tried the Omega XP drivers, they worked better but made Vista crashed at shutdown (or restart).
One thing I have to say, I did the whole install in safe Mode otherwise it ALWAYS hung at ~96% of the "Expading files" step.

Hi everyone! Temporary fix I was able to come up with!
Use the NON-WDDsomethingsomething drivers! Dont get me wrong, there are still issues, but I was at least able to get things looking right, the only issue i have now is if i try to open an image through Explorer directly, i get a page fault in non paged area bluescreen. Anywayz, there are ways of getting around that (you all can probably figure that out) but anyways just right click on the device in device manager, hit update driver, select manual install, then hit the "choose the driver from the list yourself" button/pane/panel/thing (u know what i mean) and you will see a list of the ATI drivers. I had 4 on my machine, 3 old ones and then the Catalyst/WDDthing(YES CATALYST AND THE WDDTHING ARE THE SAME DRIVER) I chose the 2nd from the top. And NO MORE ERROR 43! YAY! But yeah the catalyst thing is not even CLOSE to being a beta it is so bugged up. (Not to mention it has a date stamp saying its from the future...a time traveling device driver...creepy O.o) So dont bother downloading or trying to install it. It bluescreened my machine when i tried to. >.
could make a list of what you changed in bios because i can't seem to make a difference with my machine

I tried everything described above, nothing worked,
so i started playing around with a all my bios settings, and suddenly it worked, i don't know the specific setting (changed quite a lot) but it should work, by playing with your settings,
gl with it

hi i spent two weeks looking at this same problem-the ati driver wont load. read up and down the web with little info on it. stats= p4s8x 2.53 mhz 533 fsb 1005 bios sis 648 512 mb pc 2700 1 slot 2.5 ati 9700 pro 128 mb white box card. 36 gig raptor 2 parts onboad raid driver /windows onboad ac 97 sound c media 19 vx900 veiwsonic 1280x1024 working ONLY on vga save dvd rw
ok i try to install the wddm driver no go,tried the ati beta same luck. try to update the sis chip (648) from wndows to the asus one . then i gave up and done a 2nd clean install of vista. vista is buggy as hell in it installs i seen the same results on the forums. now i tryed this all over a 2nd time with a driver from sis agart driver and still no dice with both windows and ati drivers.
WHAT IS THE EXACT DRIVER? we need info to make reports ,we cant just try hit and miss. this is EXACTLY why ms should never go public witha beta 2 days latter cause it gums up the works. forums are a mess with silly Q&A
do we need chitset drivers updated ? is this a problem with older mobos and there chipsets? i know the 9700 pro was used for vista and glass and then it was a 9800 but no one i seen anywhere has gotten 1 to work. we need info on test system from MICROSOFT. how can we test a system when we cant get it too work. how can weed threw the data when it courpt. we need awnsers from the vista designers on how it was set up on what chipsets etc. also any known conflicts LIKE ac 97. i dont see people post info either on systems and there CHIPSETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also is plug and play a problem? why wont it turn off grrrrrrr you never sell vista if every one needs a 500 doller new vid card 1 year from now and the software buggy. ati is being NO HELP and this wont help your cause. we need surport now with facts not senceless drible like turn off ULA or reinstall the driver we not that stuid. if it not gonna work just tell us cause all you do is get a bad name that vista is imposible. i seen this same thing with xp for a year and mayby 2 after it was released and it was driver hell and plug and pray. we need direction . you lack leadership. we cant beta test with no working drivers or surport and you cant collect meaningfull data this way.

i too have the same problem (code 43) with my x850 pro.
running with an asus p4s8x-x motherboard and intel 2.4 ghz cpu
installed all new drivers from ati, tried solutions presented here, yada, yada, yada..
P4 with HT (3.2 Ghz) 2GB PC3200 Ram ATi Radeon x800 GT (256MB/128Bit)
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
When I look into the info, it says that it installed the driver successfully however something occured during the running of the driver...Any solutions or are we just waiting for a driver update for build 5384?
ATI has Vista drivers available for download. Perhaps they will work to solve your issue.

Your best bet would be to go to ATI and get the latest drivers for your video card. They are always updating drivers
